Pearl Harbour

Today is the 65th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbour and here is a picture of what the place looked like immediately after it.

Rather than discussing the attack I should like to pose a couple of questions. After the Japanese attack on the United States, Germany declared war on that country as well. As it happens, Hitler could have gone the other way. He disliked America and all it stood for but, given his views on race, he could not have been all that fond of the Japanese either. What would have happened if he had allied himself with the United States and declared war on Japan? Or stayed out of the conflict in the Pacific?

  2. Or perhaps what would have happened if the United States had not cornered the Japanese into a "Do-or-die" scenario by halting the export of ram materiels and oil and pressuring the Dutch and British into doing the same and forcing the militarist government to react?

  4. Hitler didn't like the racial makeup of the US, it being a 'mongrel' country. The Japanese were on the other side of the world with no conflict of interest with Germany. They were also a martial and 'pure' race worthy of respect, even if not as superior as the German volk. And there was no Jewish problem to solve with Japan, unlike in the USA, with Jews in finance, Hollywood and even the Supreme Court.

Harley-Or maybe the Japanese could have stopped their aggression in Korea, Manchuria, China, and VietNam. The military would never have gone for that, of course, but who knows, maybe appeasement would have worked better in the Pacific than in Europe. Sure, why not?

  6. What Mark said. Opposing Japanese aggression was right. The USA could have ignored it, but took the harder course instead. The fact that Japan then made its crimes worse by going to war against USA, Holland, Britain, Australia all at once, was their decision.

  8. At a time when criticism of the US is so strong we should remember that after Pearl Harbour they took the decision to concentrate their efforts in Europe, rather than the Pacific.

  10. Hitler declared war on the US and not on Japan because the US is a lot closer to Germany than Japan and it was much easier for him to make war on.

  12. In what way is the US a lot closer to Germany than Japan?

  14. There is no way that Germany would ally with US and vice-versa...And the answer is Britain !
