It seems that Marcus Tullius Cicero (c. 106 - 43 BC) may have had an unsuspected strain of puckish humour. This is what he said about history and historians:

"The first law for the historian is that he shall never dare utter an untruth. The second is that he shall suppress nothing that is true."

I expect it applies to conservative historians, though.
