An important birthday

Posted by Tory Historian Monday, December 21, 2009 , , ,

Tory Historian merely points out that today is the 205th anniversary of the birth of Benjamin Disraeli, later Earl of Beaconsfield, first (and so far only) Jewish born Prime Minister of Britain, the creator of the modern Conservative Party, according to some, and the man who distorted Conservative foreign policy, according to others. Tory Historian hopes that readers will weigh in with comments.

  2. Judging by the picture, no-one was ever allowed to forget that he was Jewish born.

  3. Indeed not. And the saintly Mr Gladstone was one of the worst offenders in that respect.

  5. Not sure Disraeli had much to do with the creation of the modern Tory party, but the myth was a potent tool in its creation. If by modern we mean adjusting to an age of mass suffrage and the media, then SB would have as a good a claim as most, so look nforward to celebraing his birthday when the time comes.

  7. Further to my earlier comment, is it not strange that the architect of 19th century Conservatism was Lord Liverpool and of the 20th century Baldwin. Two very similar types of leader - not sure that DC is in the same league.
